Keeping E and F Together

In the last Light Lesson, we saw that B and C always sit directly beside each other on the same string.

There is one other pair that behaves in exactly the same way:

E and F are always one fret apart.

So we now have two simple relationships that are ALWAYS TRUE:

B and C are one fret apart.
E and F are one fret apart.

All the other natural note names are two frets apart.

Have a look at the fretboard map and notice how every E leads directly to F on the next fret.

With these two simple rules, we now have the basic pattern we need to start following the natural note names up any string.
