Know Your Starting Points 

Before we can work out where other notes are, we need to know where we are starting from.

On a standard six-string guitar, the open strings are:

E, A, D, G, B, E

Starting from the bottom string, the thickest and lowest sounding string, say the names aloud:

E, A, D, G, B, E

One thing that is ALWAYS TRUE

In music, up means higher in pitch and down means lower in pitch, regardless of the instrument being played or how it happens to be positioned.

That means:

Bottom string = lowest sounding

Top string = highest sounding

Take a look at the diagram and become familiar with where each open string begins.

For now, don’t worry about finding any other notes.
